Altebrando attempted to put the reader in the mind of characters that have minimal, vague memories of their lives. However, I believe this is also part of the books only bad quality. The distinctive aspect of this book is Altebrando’s use of images to aid the reader in visualising things, and to convey words in a certain way. I also really enjoyed the story being told from multiple views and found myself picturing this book as a TV show, movie, or miniseries. The character that I least liked would be Scarlett, since it felt as though towards the end of the book, she began to lose her purpose and she became a bit mean towards many of the other characters. My two favourite characters would have to be Lucas and Scarlett’s mother, mainly because they seem to have the most developed and unique personalities. This shows that Altebrando really commits to her work, which is also displayed by extensive research into the medical terms used to explain how the children could have no recollection of the last 11 years. My favourite aspect would have to be the realistic actions and emotions of the media, families of the returned children, and surrounding community in such an event. The mystery of it all was just enough to make you not want to put down the book, but not so much that you become lost and have to re-read it like so many other thriller type novels. I thought this book had the greatest plot I’ve read in a long time. Whether they continue to live in the past, or go on to create new friendships is something you will have to find out yourselves when you read the book. Alongside this, they have to reconnect with bewildered loved ones, deal with the invasive media, and figure out what kind of people they were themselves. The story is told from the perspectives of three characters and involves their hardships with finding out the truth of the abduction and locating the sixth child, whilst dealing with their increasingly complex love lives.Īs the plot thickens with the discovery of new clues and re-emerging memories, the group finds themselves having to work together, despite their differences, to unravel the mystery. Then eleven years later, 5 of the abductees find themselves back in their hometown with absolutely no memory of the last eleven years of their lives. In The Leaving, 6 children in kindergarten are abducted shortly after witnessing a traumatic mass shooting event. Today I’ll be reviewing the last book I read which was, The Leaving by Tara Altebrando. I failed to get any comments though, which probably means that nobody has anything to say, or I’m doing an alright job. I didn’t expect anything at all for my first review so that was a welcomed surprise.
